Program Options

The Community Development Program degree is supported by the following components:

• Core Community Development Courses
• Core Business/Management courses
• Community Development Elective courses in a chosen area of study
• Elective courses in the University

All students explore core concepts and skills in community development (e.g., leadership, facilitation skills, centering equity and diversity, sustainability, understanding power and privilege, using assets, resilience, human capital, program design and management) but then students can choose to focus their learning to develop understanding and skills in a specific area.

Areas of study are flexible groups of courses to meet individual student needs. As a small program, we emphasize individual interaction with faculty and connections to community and outdoor organizations, rather than large numbers of large formal courses. In addition, depending on the area, students may take relevant courses in the other departments. The areas of study are:

Recreation Management

Community Wellness

Outdoor and Adventure Education

Social Activism
